Volunteer with us

Make a difference in a child’s life

When you volunteer with the Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation Learning Centre for Calgary, you help children who struggle to read, gain literacy skills, and confidence.

Many of our volunteers become tutors, but we also welcome and need help with support roles at the Learning Centre.

Become a tutor

Tutors work one-on-one with a child, twice a week, using the Orton-Gillingham approach teaching literacy skills. You do not need to be a teacher. We provide full training and support.

What you’ll do

  • Work one-on-one with a child
  • Follow a proven, step-by-step reading program
  • Build trust and see real progress

Your role as a tutor is more than teaching, It is about creating a supportive, one-on-one relationship where a child can gain confidence and thrive. We will guide you every step of the way.

Time commitment

  • Two one-hour sessions per week
  • Sessions are held after school, Monday to Thursday or on Saturday mornings
  • Tutors work with the same child for the duration of their program

Consistency is very important. Children do best when they work with the same tutor over time. If you’re reliable, caring, and ready to make a difference, we’ll support you every step of the way.

What we provide

  • Full training in the Orton-Gillingham approach
  • Ongoing support and guidance
  • All materials you need
  • A welcoming team and rewarding experience

Other volunteer roles

Not ready to tutor? You can still help!

We welcome volunteers for:

  • Greeting families at the door
  • Helping with events or fundraising
  • Supporting day-to-day tasks at the Learning Centre
  • Serving on the Board of Directors

Every role matters. Your time and care help children feel safe and supported.
